Does caffeine cause palpitations? If you live with anxiety or panic attacks, you may have asked this question. You may notice that after coffee, energy drinks, or even strong tea, you feel: • A racing heart • Chest fluttering • Jitters or internal restlessness Caffeine is a stimulant. It activates the nervous system by increasing adrenaline and cortisol, the same chemicals involved in the fight-or-flight response. If you are prone to anxiety or panic, this activation can be misinterpreted by the brain as danger, triggering palpitations or even a panic attack. Completely avoiding caffeine to prevent palpitations can actually make the fear stronger. When we avoid something out of fear, the brain learns that: “Palpitations are dangerous.” “I can only cope if I avoid this.” Over time, this increases hypervigilance. The body becomes more sensitive to normal heart sensations, even without caffeine, and palpitations may feel more frightening when they do occur. What helps instead: • Understanding that caffeine-related palpitations are usually not dangerous • Learning to stay present with the sensation without panicking • Making informed, flexible choices rather than fear-based avoidance This doesn’t mean you must drink coffee if you don’t want to. It means the goal is choice, not restriction driven by anxiety. Most importantly: A racing heart does not automatically mean something is wrong Anxiety symptoms can feel intense without being dangerous Sensitivity is not the same as fragility If palpitations are new, severe, or accompanied by other medical symptoms, always seek medical advice.
