I’ve never missed Canada Day fireworks with my kids. This year, I felt almost numb, sitting at home knowing I wasn’t able to go with them. It’s hard when your mind and body feel like they’re betraying you. When they came home, sad that the rain had stolen the show, I started to hear the distant pops of fireworks. Something inside me sparked. I told them to throw on their crocs and follow me. I walked all the way to the park. I watched my kids beam with joy as the sky lit up above them. In that moment, I remembered: they are part of this fight. They are my reason to live. As I stood there, feeling the night air and seeing their smiles, I felt the win.
